Signs your fuse box needs replacing

Fuse box, fuse board, consumer unit: three names for the same thing. If yours matches any of these, send us a photo of it and we will tell you honestly whether it needs changing or whether it is fine as it is.

Rewirable fuses or no RCD

Pull-out fuses with wire in them, or a board with no test button anywhere on it. There is nothing there to cut the power quickly if someone gets a shock. This is the most common reason we change a board.

Scorch marks, heat or buzzing

Browning around a breaker, a board that is warm to the touch, or a buzzing noise from inside it. Turn off what you can and ring us. This one should not wait.

It failed an EICR

A lack of RCD protection is one of the most common reasons an EICR comes back unsatisfactory. A new consumer unit usually clears it, and landlords have 28 days to get it done.

You are adding to the house

An EV charger, an extension, a new kitchen or an electric shower all need a spare way and proper protection. An old board that is already full is often the first thing to sort.

What does a new fuse box cost?

A consumer unit replacement starts from £630. Quotes are free, and the price you are given is fixed in writing before any work starts.

What moves the price is the number of circuits, the type of protection you choose, and the state of what is already there. Every circuit is tested as part of the job. If that testing finds a fault on the existing wiring, it has to be put right before the circuit can go back on, and we will show you what we have found and price it before going any further.

Send a photo of your current board on WhatsApp and we can usually tell you roughly where you will land before anyone visits.

What is included

A modern metal consumer unit with RCD protection, fitted and labelled so you can see what every breaker does.

Every circuit tested, with an Electrical Installation Certificate for the new board.

The work notified to Building Control through NICEIC, with the compliance certificate sent to you. You will want it when you sell.

Common questions

How long does a fuse box replacement take?

Most homes are done within a day. The power is off for most of that time, so plan around it: charge phones, and let us know beforehand about anything that cannot be without power, such as medical equipment or a fish tank.

Do I need a new fuse box if my EICR failed?

Often, but not always. If the report lists a lack of RCD protection, or damage and overheating at the board, a new consumer unit is usually the fix. If the codes are about earthing, bonding or damaged sockets, the board may be fine. Send us the report and we will tell you what actually needs doing, not the most expensive version of it.

Is my old plastic fuse box illegal?

No. A plastic consumer unit that is in good condition does not have to be ripped out. The rule is that any new or replacement unit in a home has to have a non-combustible enclosure, which in practice means metal. If yours is plastic and sits under a wooden staircase or on an escape route, an EICR may recommend changing it.

Does the work need to be certified?

Yes. Replacing a consumer unit is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. As a NICEIC Approved Contractor we certify our own work: you get an Electrical Installation Certificate from us, and the Building Regulations compliance certificate arrives separately. Be wary of any price that does not include both.

Will a new consumer unit stop my electrics tripping?

It depends what is causing it, and our guide to why electrics keep tripping runs through the usual causes. A modern board protects each circuit properly, so one fault no longer takes half the house out with it. But a breaker that trips is usually reporting a real fault on that circuit, and a new board will find that fault, not hide it. We test before we fit, so you know what you are dealing with.

How do your prices compare with British Gas and the national firms?

We cannot speak for their prices, only ours: from £630, quoted free, fixed in writing, and fitted by the same local electricians who priced it. Get a quote from both. We would rather you compared.

Covering Leeds, Otley and Wetherby

We fit consumer units across the LS1 to LS18 postcodes, plus Otley and Wetherby. Leeds has a lot of terraces and semis still running on boards from the 1970s and 80s, so whatever is in your cellar or under your stairs, we have almost certainly seen it before.

Not sure if yours needs changing?

Send a photo of your fuse box on WhatsApp. You will get a straight answer, and a free fixed quote if it does.
