Terms and conduits of work
These terms apply to all work carried out by Coleman Electrical & Security. By accepting a quote, booking work, or asking us to start, you agree to these terms.
1) Quotes, scope and changes
- Quotes cover the work described in the quote or job detail sheet only.
- If you ask us to change the scope, add items, or if we uncover unsafe or non-compliant issues that must be resolved to proceed safely, we will confirm the change and any cost and time impact before continuing (where practical).
- If parts or materials become unavailable, we may propose an equivalent alternative. We will confirm this with you first.
Good to know: Electrical work sometimes reveals hidden issues once we open up access. We will always aim to keep you informed and agree next steps.
2) Deposits and payments
- Some work requires a deposit in advance, for example to book labour, secure a date, or order materials. If a deposit is required, we will confirm the amount before booking.
- Unless agreed otherwise in writing, invoices are due on completion of the works.
- Where work is staged (for example large rewires), we may invoice in agreed stages.
3) Late payment and certificates
- If payment is overdue, we reserve the right to charge interest at 8% above the Bank of England base rate, calculated daily, from the due date until paid.
- We may also charge reasonable costs for recovering overdue amounts (for example admin time and third party recovery fees), where permitted.
- No certificates, test results, commissioning sheets or similar documentation will be issued until all monies are paid in full.
4) Retention of title
- Where we supply goods or materials, ownership remains with Coleman Electrical & Security until all monies owed are paid in full.
- Payments will be allocated to labour first and then to materials, unless agreed otherwise in writing.
- If more than one invoice is outstanding, we may allocate payments to the oldest labour costs first and then the oldest materials costs.
5) Access, preparation and dust
- You must provide safe and reasonable access to the work areas at the agreed times. Work is priced on this basis.
- Please ensure we can access consumer units, meters, sockets, switches, loft hatches, and any areas relevant to the job.
- Electrical work can create dust and debris. We tidy up, but dust can travel beyond the immediate work area.
- It is your responsibility to protect or move fragile, valuable, or breakable items away from work areas and away from potential dust and debris.
- We cannot be held liable for additional cleaning, decoration, or redecoration required due to the nature of the work.
Elderly or impaired clients: We do not expect you to move heavy items. If you ask us to help move items, we can do so on a no-liability basis and only where it is safe for our team.
6) Carpets, floor coverings and making good
- If floor coverings or carpets need lifting, this is done on the basis that we are not liable for any damage.
- Unless specifically included in writing, our quotes exclude redecorating, re-plastering, patch repairs, and specialist making good.
- We can arrange other trades (for example plasterers, joiners, decorators) if requested. Any such work will be specifically detailed and may be charged separately.
7) Permissions, building control and flats
- Some dwellings (including flats and maisonettes) may require permissions, consents, or building control notifications for certain works. It is the responsibility of the client or property owner to obtain any required permissions unless we agree otherwise in writing.
- Where a property has restrictions (including pre-stressed concrete beams or structural limits), we will avoid anything that risks damage. In some flats, surface wiring may be the only option included within the price.
- If you are a tenant or agent, you confirm you have authority to instruct the work and grant access.
8) Other trades and subcontractors
- We do not usually employ other trades as part of our work.
- If other trades are needed or requested, we can include them where practical. Any subcontracted work will be confirmed in writing.
9) Workmanship, testing and guarantees
- We carry out work with reasonable care and skill and aim to comply with applicable UK standards and regulations relevant to the job.
- Where testing or certification is part of the agreed scope, this will be completed once the work is finished and paid in full.
- Any manufacturer warranties on supplied products remain subject to the manufacturer’s terms.
- Our workmanship guarantee applies to the work we have carried out, not to pre-existing faults, third party work, or customer-supplied equipment.
10) Liability and insurance
- We are not responsible for defects, delays, or failures caused by existing wiring, hidden defects, unsafe installations by others, or issues outside our control.
- We are not liable for indirect or consequential losses (for example loss of profit, loss of business, loss of data), except where the law says we cannot exclude liability.
- Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or anything else that cannot be limited under UK law.
11) Cancellations and rescheduling
- Please give as much notice as possible if you need to reschedule.
- For missed appointments or late cancellations, we may charge a reasonable call-out or lost time fee, which we will explain at the time.
- Consumer cancellation rights: If you are a consumer and you agree to the work being booked or started off-premises (for example by phone or email), you may have a legal right to cancel within 14 days under the Consumer Contracts Regulations. If you ask us to start within that period, you may need to pay for the work completed up to the point of cancellation. This does not affect your statutory rights.
12) Problems and complaints
- If you are unhappy with any aspect of the work, please contact us as soon as possible and give us a reasonable chance to inspect and put things right.
- Please do not instruct a third party to carry out remedial work without giving us the opportunity to assess first, unless there is an urgent safety risk.
13) General
- These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
- If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest remains in effect.
- These terms do not affect your statutory rights as a consumer.
